Just two months after Steve Jobs presented plans for a new Apple headquarters that may or may not be designed by Foster + Partners, fellow technology behemoth Google announced plans to augment its Mountain View, California campus — or “Googleplex” in Silicon Valley parlance — with a new facility designed by Ingenhoven Architects. The German firm is best known for high-performance buildings in Europe, including Luxembourg’s European Investment Bank addition, Frankfurt’s Lufthansa Aviation Center, and the RWE Tower in Essen, and Google promises that its new facility will be no less ambitious when it comes to sustainability.
The Royal Institute of British Architects announced the shortlist for this year’s Stirling Prize today. All six of the projects that made the cut are by designers previously in the running for the prize. Two contenders—David Chipperfield Architects and Zaha Hadid—have won for other work in past years.
