About 20 minutes into a ferry ride up the East River on an overcast Thursday afternoon, a luminous white mass appeared along the western shore of Randall’s Island. Up close it looks like a catering tent stretched to the length of three football fields. But inside, the home of the first New York edition of the Frieze Art Fair is an airy and comfortable if sprawling exhibition space.

The Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum announced the winners of its annual design awards earlier today. It honored architect and TED conference creator Richard Saul Wurman with this year's lifetime achievement award. Atlanta firm Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects received the award for Architecture. And Stoss Landscape Urbanism of Boston won for landscape architecture.

Yesterday One World Trade officially became the tallest building in New York, moving the Empire State Building into the second place slot once again.

Steven Holl navigated a small crowd packed into a closet-size annex to Manhattan’s Meulensteen gallery on Thursday evening. His firm had just unveiled its design for a new Institute of Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University, and in addition to releasing the standard set of renderings, it also mounted an exhibition of 30 models and drawings for the project. During the opening, Holl explained the plan in detail to visitors jostling through the tiny space.

Our host, ThyssenKrupp Elevator Americas, led us on a generous tour of the Skidmore, Owings & Merrill-designed tower, still very much an active construction site as it inches toward 104 floors.
