The commercial construction market is booming in Washington, D.C., yet the nation’s capital imposes significant constraints on the design of new buildings, notably restrictions on height and massing. This symposium will explore, through three case studies, how innovative architectural concepts can respond to such challenges and result in dramatic yet contextual alternatives to the standard contemporary glass office building.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the key zoning restrictions to building in Washington, D.C. and how such constraints can lead to positive design solutions.
- Discuss some of the ways that contemporary office buildings can better engage the streetscape and enhance the public realm.
- Describe strategies for re-imagining glass curtain walls to create dynamic façades that animate the cityscape and reduce energy loads.
- Explain methods for enhancing occupant well-being by exploiting daylight and views in the workplace.
