Adolescent Mental Health and School Security is intertwined. The impact of COVID-19 isolation mixed with news/media focus on multiple cultural issues has increased the concern for damaging events not only with individual self-harm but the harm of others. This course will review the state of adolescent mental health and the effect on school security best practices, planning, and design.
Learning Objectives:
- Review the state and environmental conditions effecting adolescent mental health.
- Explore the commonalities of school security active shooter events and lessons learned.
- Evaluate best practices in planning/design from a mental health perspective with security policies, programming, use of materials, and technology to create healthy and inclusive learning environments.
- Discuss case studies that highlight elevation of school design AND security to support health, safety, and welfare in schools.
