Are you in D.C. for the AIA Convention? Be sure to visit the Hirshhorn. But go after sunset--when the museum is closed. Through Sunday night a site-specific video and sound installation by artist Doug Aitken is on view. As RECORD has already noted in a “first look” piece and a lighting story, Aitken’s work, entitled Song 1, transforms the impenetrable concrete facade of Gordon Bunshaft’s 1974 donut-shaped building into a giant projection screen. It features people (some famous and some not) performing I Only Have Eyes for You in anonymous diners, parking lots, and factories. And between those vignettes Aitken creates patterns on the surface of the building from images such as light dancing on the surface of water and automobile headlights. It is disconcerting but beautiful. But don’t take my word for it. Check it out for yourself! (If for some reason you can't get there, watch the video in our library.)
