The jury applauded the architect, who will be presented with the prize this coming weekend, for designing “beautiful and durable buildings with a nuanced elegance that moves the spirit of all who experience them.”

Also recognized by the New York–based honor society are Julie Bargmann, Beatriz Colomina, and Krzysztof Wodiczko. 

The Chicago-based firm’s design concept triumphed over shortlisted proposals from Höweler + Yoon, MOS with Hood Design Studio, and NADAAA.

The forthcoming building designed by SO – IL will be featured in an exhibition opening this May at the liberal arts college’s current museum space.

Two separate honors bestowed by the College of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology will recognize built works in North, South, and Central America completed in 2022–2023. 

The jury praised the Yokohama-based architect for “reminding us that in architecture, as in democracy, spaces must be created by the resolve of the people.”

Completed in 1942, the National Historic Landmark–designated site in Columbus, Indiana, is considered one of the first Modernist churches in the U.S.
