DDC Releases New Handbook of Municipal Design Principles

A new initiative from New York City’s primary design and construction agency aims to inspire rather than instruct.

The New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC) unveiled a revamped set of priorities March 9 for architects working on public facilities and infrastructure. These four new guiding principles—equity, sustainability, resiliency, and healthy living—align with Mayor Bill de Blasio’s environmental and economic policies.

Since the 1990s, the U.S. State Department has been barred from spending public funds on world expo pavilions. The result has been a series of disasters: the U.S. was a no-show at the expo in Hanover, Germany, in 2000; it then built lackluster, overly commercialized pavilions for the 2005 and 2010 expos in Aichi, Japan, and Shanghai, China.

Foster + Partners, Grimshaw Architects, and Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) will design a trio of pavilions for Expo 2020 in Dubai. The three firms beat ten competitors in a global competition whose results were announced on March 12.

It’s not news that the architectural profession is demographically skewed. Despite moderate progress over the last decade, women and people of color continue to be underrepresented. However, a report released by the AIA yesterday puts these disparities into numbers.

Fresh off a string of high-profile commissions, Danish architect Bjarke Ingels and his firm, BIG, have been selected to design the 2016 Serpentine Pavilion in London this summer. And, for the first time, four other architects—Kunlé Adeyemi/NLÉ, Barkow Leibinger, Yona Friedman, and Asif Khan—will each create a summer house to accompany it.

Architecture buffs will likely know the Sheats-Goldstein Residence as John Lautner’s Beverly Hills space-age masterpiece. Others may recognize it as pornographer Jackie Treehorn’s pad in the 1998 Coen Brothers' film, The Big Lebowski. Beginning today, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) will consider it an impending part of its collection.
