A new carbon-neutral museum invites visitors to dig for fossils beneath a strategically sited mass-timber-and-concrete structure.

Mario Cucinella Architects oversaw the final stages of the long-awaited transformation, adding a striking wood pavilion to the 18th-century mansion’s courtyard among other elements. 

The $150 million project rationalizes the museum’s program and ensconces additions with a glacier-inspired glass and GFRC facade.

Designed by op.Architecture + Landscape, the museum occupies four levels of a brick-faced, Morris Adjmi–designed condo building on Mulberry Street.
