A growing movement is reviving load-bearing masonry construction, using innovative techniques to overcome stone's limitations and reduce embodied carbon.
Through the creation of the Norman Foster Institute on Sustainable Cities, overseen by his Madrid-based foundation, the starchitect aims to train “the civic leaders of the future” to face the challenges of a rapidly urbanizing world.
“Addressing climate change and the entire built environment begins with design,” writes Architecture 2030’s Edward Mazria. “We’ve taken the initiative to lead, now the work intensifies as we expand our scope, influence, and impact.”
