As would be expected, the opening of the New Acropolis Museum has re-ignited the debate about the return of the Parthenon’s so-called Elgin Marbles to Athens.
The marble for this stunning octastyle, peripteral, Doric temple (with Ionic architectural elements), came from nearby Mount Pentelikon. It was designed to house a huge statue of Athena Parthenos ( 26 cubits tall, or just over 36 feet in height) which Phidias sculpted in ivory and gold. Indeed, the statue of Athena wore enough removable gold plate to operate as something of a bank. As Neils points out in The Parthenon Frieze, “Given all this gold (44 talents) this statue was the symbolic if not physical embodiment of the Delian Treasury.” Photo courtesy of the British Committee of Reunification of
The Berlin site is woven into a dense urban fabric, but the embassy in Beijing, designed by Craig Hartman of the San Francisco office of SOM, sits within a gated island of walled space several ring roads removed from the Forbidden City.

Renzo Piano Building Workshop bridges a historic structure and a grand public space with its trademark Classicism at The Art Institute of Chicago's Modern Wing.
Chicago, Illinois Renzo Piano Building Workshop The Modern Wing: Where a Familiar Type Soars Renzo Piano’s Modern Wing at the Art Institute of Chicago isn’t simply the best new building to hit Chicago in years. It represents the triumph of a type — the art museum with parallel masonry walls, generous expanses of glass, and an oversailing roof that serves as a louvered sunshade for galleries below. When Piano introduced this type at his Beyeler Foundation Museum near Basel, Switzerland, in 1997, it was overshadowed by the hoopla surrounding Frank Gehry’s eruption of titanium in Bilbao. Yet time has revealed
