Led by a committee chaired by 2024 AIA president Kimberly Dowdell, the search to replace former chief executive Lakisha Ann Woods comes at an uncertain time for both the profession and American institutions. 

Uncertainty around the impact of recently announced tariffs and immigration policies have dampened the economic outlook for the building industry, with the latest ABI data showing a drop in new project inquiries for the first time since 2020.

The AIA/Deltek Architectural Billings Index shows 11 straight months of declining contracts, with firms shedding more than 1,400 positions last year.

Members and staff say that Woods’ constant pressure to monetize the AIA’s programs and services created tension.  

Despite a rally last fall, the latest ABI data from the American Institute of Architects charts a sharp decrease in firm billings. 

The 23 recognized projects include work by New York City–based practices, including REX, CookFox, and Snøhetta. 

Though cleared of any wrongdoing in an independent investigation, Woods’ tenure was clouded by a scandal of alleged financial mismanagement and nepotism.
