Zapallar, Chile

Project size: 6,383 square feet

Program: The clients asked the architects to design a new beach house on a steep site that would maximize sightlines to the sea and surrounding landscape.

Location: The house is located in Zapallar, an upscale beach resort town on the Chilean coast.

Solution: The house, composed of two levels of overlapping rectilinear bars, capitalizes on views, sunlight, and wind exposure. The upper level is bent at an obtuse angle, and rests partially on the lower level at the south end, while braced against a rock at the north end. Because the upper level straddles a gap between the lower level and the rock, residents can walk directly from the street to the water.

The exterior is painted grey to match the color of the rocks along the shoreline, while the interior is finished with white wood panels and dark wood floors. On the lower level, the architects positioned the living and dining areas to capture views of the water, while tucking more private areas, including the kitchen, utility room, and extra bedroom, behind. There are three bedrooms upstairs, all with views of the water.

Construction methods: To reduce construction time, the architects used prefabricated concrete panels with a high isolation performance.
