Aquinnah, MA
Site Size: 2.69 acres
Project Size: 2,100 square feet
Program: A family wanted a light-filled, modern beach house that was spacious enough for gatherings, but intimate enough for a winter retreat.
Location: The house rests on a sand dune surrounded by wetlands along the Atlantic coast.
Solution: The house'a weathered mahogany box sitting on top of a concrete retaining wall'was designed to appear like driftwood washed up on the dunes. A bronze and wooden ramp leads to the second floor entry. At the top, a foyer opens to reading, dining, kitchen, and living areas. A porch runs along the living space, shaded by wooden shutters that provide privacy. A walnut and glass stairway rises up through a sliding skylight to a curved roof deck that offers views in every direction.
Construction methods: Steel framing and concrete decking helped create high-ceiling spaces and a roof terrace. The architects used horizontal boards to form the house's concrete entry wall and give it scale and texture. They also specified architectural bronze for exterior details, such as window frames.
