Las Vegas, Nevada
Client: University of Nevada, Las Vegas
Completion date: December 2008
Program: A 119,165-square-foot, five-story complex that includes classrooms, labs, faculty offices, departmental suites, and radio and television broadcasting facilities.
Solution: Conceiving the addition as a gateway to the southern end of campus, the architects wanted Greenspun Hall to complement the university's modernist buildings while encouraging collegiality with lots of open, communal space. Using a desert-inspired palette of tawny brick and red sandstone, they created two L-shaped wings—concentrating faculty offices in one and classrooms in the other—and united them with an elevated courtyard. Wide landscaped staircases at opposite corners lead up to the courtyard, which is capped with a louvered photovoltaic canopy. The plinth underneath the courtyard houses Greenspun's broadcasting facilities and is linked to the courtyard via a glassed-in double-height commons. The sandy palette continues on the interior, with light wood furniture and accents of red sandstone and dark-stained plywood.
Total construction cost: $59 million
