Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Client: The University of Pennsylvania
Completion date: June 2009
Program: A 49,000-square-foot, four-story flagship uniting the policy center's staff in one building. It includes offices, conference rooms, broadcast facilities, a three-level atrium, and a 200-person hall for lectures, receptions, and presentations.
Solution: Charged with designing a glass building on a campus dominated by brick and stone, the designers wanted to give a modern glass facade some of the warmth and depth of the more traditional buildings next door. They layered wood with glass to produce a kind of lantern effect: behind the facade's sleek aluminum and glass curtainwall the architects placed adjustable wood-panel screens. On the interior, a three-level skylit atrium brings light into the lower floors and unites the center's various research disciplines, whose offices line the perimeter. In the lobby, a white terrazzo floor and limestone-panel wall extend the feeling of brightness.
