The project that first gained architects Eric Höweler and J. Meejin Yoon international attention was an LED light installation called “White Noise/White Light,” created for the Athens Olympics in 2004. The pair often seeks to incorporate electronic media into their designs.

“White Noise/White Light” was made with hand-fabricated, fiber-optic fixtures and was installed on the side of the Acropolis in Athens for 30 days. A year later, the installation was mounted again at MIT, where both architects teach.

Howeler + Yoon were finalists in the 2006 P.S. 1 Contemporary Arts Center’s Young Architects Program, an annual competition to design a temporary pavilion for the museum’s courtyard in Queens, New York. The team’s project, entitled “Loop,” is a densely packed lattice of loop forms, which act as seats as well as structure.

The team designed “Loop” to be an immersive social environment that encourages unpredictable social exchange.

So far, Höweler + Yoon has mainly worked on small projects, such as renovations, interiors, and houses. The architects say their team enjoys small-scale, custom-design work, which allows for an intense, hands-on approach to design.
