Project size: 4,650 square feet
Program: The architects were tasked with renovating one half of a carriage house, which had been split down the middle by a developer. The main goal was getting light into the middle portion of the long and narrow space, and creating a connection to the outdoors.
Location: Brooklyn, NY
Solution: The architects installed a large central skylight, as well as a three-story pendant light below it, which serves as the focal point of a new winding staircase made of steel and oak. New steel windows evoke the building’s industrial past. The team also relandscaped the rear garden and roof decks to provide green views on every level.
Construction and materials: Warm metal accents and light colored woods soften large rooms; a wall of cerused oak panels hides a powder room and kitchen storage, and a mod stained glass window serves as a privacy screen for the master bath.
