Client: Cannon Design
Date completed: August 2008
Program: A 32,000-square-foot office for 120 employees that includes a gallery and exhibit space. The basement features a model shop, library, and boardroom. An oblong rooftop structure once used to store coal conveyor equipment now houses another boardroom and the staff lunchroom.
Design concept and solution: In 2007, Cannon Design purchased a 19,000-square-foot powerhouse originally constructed in 1928 and decommissioned in 1980. The steel-structured building once provided coal-fired steam heat to a dozen buildings in the downtown area. Cannon Design restored, renovated, and adapted the building for reuse as their office space. They retained the original steel structure, which featured eight columns and truss work, and designed a new steel system to support second and third floors, which cantilever over the ground-floor gallery. The firm restored the revival style exterior, which features tall, arched windows and terra cotta detailing. The project was awarded LEED Gold status in 2009, in part for its underground cistern storm water collection system, the light-colored roof materials that reduce the heat-island effect, and high-efficiency plumbing fixtures.
