Sources may have confirmed Wednesday that the Obama Presidential Center was to be located in Jackson Park on Chicago’s South Side, but today the President himself made it official.
“Michelle and I are thrilled that the Obama Presidential Center will be developed in the heart of Chicago’s South Side, a community we call home and that means the world to us,” President Obama said in a statement. “With a center in Jackson Park, not only will we be able to affect local change, but we can attract the world to this historic neighborhood, whose rich cultural heritage dates back to the 1893 World’s Fair.”
The Obama Foundation, in its announcement, touted the strength of nearby institutions including the DuSable Museum, The University of Chicago, and the Museum of Science and Industry, as well as strong community ties. New York-based firm Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects will design the center.
Said President Obama, “We can’t wait to forge new ways to give back to the people of Chicago who have given us so much.”
