Since founding Jackson, Mississippi-based Duvall Decker with partner Roy Decker, Anne Marie has led this place-centered, community-engaged practice with an intentional focus on promoting social and environmental health. For nearly 25 years, the firm has pursued a simple proposition that all architecture is public work. Anne Marie believes the opportunity to design the built environment is a privilege that comes with public responsibilities. Architecture must be both a radical act of service and a hopeful artistic speculation. In every project, no matter its size, type, or budget, architects can expose needs and design strategies to heal, build upon the beauty of place, add value, and elevate human experience. In this search for public good, Duvall Decker has been honored with many peer-reviewed national, regional, and local design awards and has been selected for national design excellence projects such as the new Federal Courthouse in Greenville, Mississippi (a GSA Design Excellence project) and the new Springdale, Arkansas Municipal Complex (a Walton Family Foundation Design Excellence project). And most recently, the firm was recognized by the Architect’s Newspaper as the best medium-sized firm in the Southeast. Anne Marie is a teacher and role model within the firm where she leads a collaborative and talented team across a broad spectrum of project types, programs, and budgets. The ethic that underlies the work is that the consequences of our actions mean more than our self-interests. For Duvall Decker, architectural practice is, by design and necessity, expanded to include community and strategic planning and development consulting before there are architectural projects and to provide facilities maintenance to care for buildings throughout their lives. Beyond the studio, Anne Marie has served the profession in many capacities, as a long-term board member and past president of AIA Mississippi and as a Trustee and 2021 Chair of the AIA Trust. She is often invited to share her experience as a lecturer, critic, visiting professor, and design juror. She was recently appointed to serve the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations as a 2021-2023 Industry Advisory Group peer and was named Mississippi State University College of Architecture, Art, & Design’s 2023 Alumna of the Year.
