Site size: 1.5 acres
Project size: 6,000 square feet
Program: The clients asked for a summer house to be built on a site within a FEMA floodplain—50% of which is unbuildable wetlands.
Location: The ocean-side town of Southampton, New York
Solution: The site’s tricky location provided an opportunity to capture a variety of spaces that could exist under, over, and between the building and the landscape. Three volumes—the “public” wing, the “guest” wing, and the “family wing”—elevate heated areas and critical infrastructure above the floodplain. These volumes organize the primary indoor rooms, while the spaces between the house and ground create a series of outdoor areas such as a carport, courtyard, pool pavilion, terrarium, and roof terraces.
Construction and materials: The zinc-clad structure is composite wood and steel with concrete foundations. Other primary materials include clear western red cedar, Jerusalem grey-gold limestone, and mahogany doors and windows.
