Site size: 13,800 square feet
Project size: 6,300 square feet
Program: A single-family house that would accommodate a variety of functions and provide a quiet retreat from a noisy street nearby.
Location: A densely populated neighborhood in residential Cambridge.
Solution: The three-story structure encompasses an open-plan kitchen and living room, office space, a media lounge, children's bedrooms, and both a guest and master suite. The rooms are oriented to provide views to the outdoors, away from the bustling street.
Construction and materials: The architects designed the steel and wood frame house with an ipe and zinc paneled rainscreen cladding the exterior. The crisp, precise detailing includes interiors of dark walnut and white plaster. Energy consumption is lowered through use of high efficiency mechanical systems and solar photovoltaic panels on the roof.
